Journalist or No Journalist?

We keep asking one central question in class: Is this journalism? To continue that line of conversation, I ask you: Is Josh Wolf a journalist?

I recently saw coverage of this case on television. It made me think of similar unrest going on in Oaxaca, Mexico where NYC journalist Brad Will was killed while filming a documentary.

I wonder if this series of events had panned out differently for Josh Wolf and he was the victim as opposed to the police officer, would the U.S. instead recognize him as a working journalist, who stood up for what he believed in, as opposed to a convicted criminal with no journalistic knowledge?

Is this man a journalist?
Absolutely!

Not in the formal sense, but he is doing what I feel a responsible citizen journalist SHOULD do. He's recording the facts, and not giving his sources or evidence to one side or another in the interests of preserving a balance between readership and the powers that be.

Anarchist or not, he's doing the right thing.
